Public Archaeology Dig Returns to Fort Saint Louis – Summer 2025

The Cape Sable Historical Society’s Barrington Museum Complex is thrilled to partner with the Nova Scotia Museum for the return of archaeological investigations at Fort Saint Louis, Port la Tour, Shelburne County! Located on the coast, Fort Saint Louis is a site at risk of erosion due to the growing impacts of climate change, making this work more urgent than ever. Every season is a chance to preserve what might soon be lost to the sea.

Excavation begins: Monday, June 16th

Digging schedule: Monday to Saturday, 9:30 AM — 4:30 PM (weather dependent)

The public is welcome to stop by, watch, and ask questions during open hours! School group visits are encouraged–please reach out to book!

Public dig dates: June 30, July 1-3, 2025

This season, we are pleased to offer two days of public archaeology participation exclusively to members of the ACADIAN community on July 4th and 5th, from 10 am to 4:30 pm. If you are interested in participating, please complete this Google form: https://forms.gle/VrAL83gyLDPizB4u5

Shifts are first come, first served. You’ll receive confirmation by email.

Important details:

Open to ages 9 and up (under 19 must be accompanied by an adult).

No public parking at the site –participants will meet at a designated nearby location 30 minutes before your shift to take a shuttle. This information will be shared after registration.

Participants must be able to:

Kneel and stand for extended periods

Carry ~20 lbs of soil in buckets.

Work in warm weather and sift soil on screens.
